Student Experience
Real World Learning
You will be immersed in the health care industry through the required summer internship; a year long culminating capstone project; short, specialized courses taught by health care executives; career counseling and professional development from four executives-in-residence; trips to Boston in the fall and Washington, D.C. in the spring; and guest speakers in the colloquium series.
Summer Internships
You will undertake a 10-week summer internship, usually paid, after you complete the first year of the program. The internships allow you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real projects at a health care organization. You can expect to return to the campus with a deeper understanding of the rewards and challenges in the field, as well as a renewed focus and motivation for your second year. You may even return to campus with an offer for a full-time job.
Boston Innovation/Information Technology Trek in the Fall
Every other year we take both Sloan residential cohorts and both Sloan Executive MHA students (a total of about 150 students) to Boston for a 2-day conference where we hear from companies that are disrupting the health care industry (e.g., digital health start-ups), private equity investors who are financing these companies, entrepreneurs who are leading these companies, and incumbent firms (e.g., health systems) that are innovating to improve quality, access, and reduce costs.
Health Policy Trek to Washington, D.C. in the Spring
Every other year we take both Sloan residential cohorts to Washington, D.C. in the spring for a 2-day health policy trek where we hear from a diverse set of policymakers on salient issues.
Workshops
You will participate in workshops that teach you such skills as negotiating, leading important discussions, résumé construction, behavioral and case interviewing, networking, and writing a business plan for a startup or a practice in an established company.
Executives-in-Residence
Your Sloan journey comes with your own guide. Every year, two experienced Sloan alumni are assigned to the incoming class to help prepare students over their two years for the job market. During their regular campus visits, the EIRs critique résumés, perform mock interviews, and help identify and secure internships and full-time positions customized to students’ unique career interests. Practitioner-Led Intensive Courses (PLICS)
Sloan offers at least eight Practitioner-Led Intensive courses (PLICs) per year. PLICs are one- or two-credit weekend courses taught by experienced health care executives that allow students to develop expertise in a special topic or skill.
“In the Big Data PLIC, I help students think critically about the evolving ecosystem of organizations developing big data solutions and to draw insights from real-world case studies to shed light on how data and technology are being used to transform care.”
— Arnaub Chatterjee, Sloan ’07 | CIPA ’08
Case Competitions
Sloan students participate in a variety of national Case Competitions such as UAB, Cleveland Clinic, NAHSE, and OSU, among others. Cornell Sloan also developed its own national competition and collaborates with premier organizations as sponsors and cohosts.
Mentorship Program
Having someone on your side who can show you the ropes can accelerate your learning and help you prepare for a work opportunity. Sloan maintains close ties to many professionals in health care as well as to active alumni network.
The Sloan Alumni Association sponsors a Mentor Program that can match you to professionals with similar career interests. Alumni who volunteer as mentors will provide you with one-on-one professional guidance and advice. It’s not unusual for these mentoring relationships to last beyond graduation.
