Steve Israel

Professor of Practice; Director, Institute of Politics and Global Affairs

Former Congressman Steve Israel heads the non-partisan Cornell University Institute of Politics and Global Affairs at the Brooks School.

Professor Israel was a Member of Congress for sixteen years. He left in 2017, having served as House Democrats’ chief political strategist between 2011-2015 as Chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He also served as a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. 

Professor Israel’s political insights appear regularly in the New York Times, Washington Post, Atlantic Magazine, and on MSNBC, CNN, Sixty Minutes and HBO, among others.

He has previously served as a Tisch College Visiting Fellow at Tufts University and as an Institute of Politics Pritzker Fellow at the University of Chicago.

Professor Israel is the author of two satirical looks at Washington politics: The Global War on Morris and Big Guns.
