International Applicants
Approximately 60 percent of our student body is international. To support their unique needs and ease the transition to life in the U.S., Cornell offers a robust network of programs covering immigration, housing, finances, and social integration. These services are coordinated by Cornell’s Office of Global Learning.
English Language Proficiency
International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, unless they meet the criteria for a standing exemption. Required minimum scores on the TOEFL exam are: writing 20; listening 15; reading 20; and speaking 22. The required minimum overall band score on the IELTS exam is 7.0.
Visit the Graduate School Admissions site for more information regarding the English language proficiency requirement, including standing exemptions and how to submit your scores.
Admitted Students: Certifying Funds
Should you accept an offer of admission, you will receive an email inviting you to complete the Admission Supplement for International Students. This email will include an estimate of your annual expenses and provide you with the amount of funding that you will need to certify for visa purposes. Upon completion of the Admission Supplement, the Cornell Graduate School will issue your I-20 or DS-2019 (if applicable). For more information about certifying funds and the 1-20 process visit the Graduate School’s Admissions and Admitted Student FAQ.
